Awake
- Hey! Wake up wake up. I said. – Talk to me. Remember how we met? You gave me such a hard time. Remember? Why wouldn’t you, you were the most popular girl in school right?
- Liar, hehe! *cough*.
- Oh come on… – Then I stared away into the horizon. Nothing but silence. – …you had a bunch of guys always trying to get to you, that’s why I always thought I would never had a possibility with you. That didn’t stop me though.
- No it didn’t. – She said half asleep.
We stood quiet for a minute, while I was trying to think of new things to talk about as time slowly passed. I was trying to look around me, except there was nothing else but stillness.
- Wake up, tell me…
- What what?
- Don’t fall asleep on me, we’re talking, that’s just rude. Stay with me.
- I’m here, I’m here. What did you ask me again?
- How did you manage to fall for me? I mean seriously. I know we have talked about it many times but I love hearing that story.
- You just want me to *cough* *cough* pump up your already inflated ego.
- You know it. – I responded with a smile.
- Well, I don’t know, you were always there for me. Nothing but pretty words you always said to me. We girls never know what we want until it is too late. I just thank God it wasn’t too late for *cough* me. Can you forgive me for making you suffer so?
- Don’t be ridic…
- Please, I want to hear it.
I couldn’t verbalize anything but reacted with a smile. – You’re forgiven. – I told her right after.
After a while, the smell was starting to get to me. I felt queasy and aching. I couldn’t believe it was so quiet. Where were they?
- I miss my bed. – She finally whispered.
- I know I know, me too. I promise you the best and longest foot massage when we get home.
- I’d like that. You took too long to offer it. I love you.
- I love you too.
After another few minutes of silence, she finally said. – We had a good ten years, no?
- Don’t say that. You make it sound like you’re leaving me “tonta”. You know how you love it when I call you like that.
- You and your… *cough* *cough* showing off. *cough* *cough*.
…Where are they?
- Is that deer okay? – She suddenly said. – We didn’t kill it did we?
- No sweetie, I think the deer is fine. – I whispered to her, trying to hold a tear with my smile.
- Good.
The smell of gas was getting so strong that I could barely stay awake. All the debris and the wreckage were the only things within my view, as well as an empty road.
All of a sudden I heard them in the distance.
- Hey! I hear them coming. I hear the ambulance arriving! Wake up, I can hear them. Stay with me…
