Under a blanket of rain

…there was something missing that night. She had lost faith long before it happened, yet she had some hope concealed deep inside her heart, to use only in cases of extreme emergency; she thought this was such case. She didn’t want to lose hope because that would mean she would be losing everything she had worked for all these months. She would feel like karma had pulled a trick on her.

And then she saw him opening his front door, and all of a sudden nothing made sense that night, not the words, not the looks, not the very air they were breathing; or at least she felt that way. She was ready to leave her pride at the entrance, to leave everything aside for something she thought was grander; to start over from scratch like if it were morning. She wanted to love him but unfortunately things turned out precisely as she had anticipated; and unfortunately her mouth was quicker than her heart. As soon as she stepped through the door, she forgot the reason why she came in the first place.

– Surprised? – She said while trying to hold her breath. – I come to say goodbye.

He didn’t say a word, because he knew exactly what she meant. He didn’t say a word, but asked anyway with an inquiring tone. – What are you talking about?

- I made a decision. I’m starting over. – She said with a shaky voice. – I’m starting over someplace far-off where you can’t hurt me any longer.

The clocks around him froze for a second, while that scene kept rewinding in his mind. He had nothing to say, he wanted to tell her to stay but nothing came out.

- You’re parting because of me? – He blurted out. – That’s the easy way out. Never thought of you as a coward, as a girl who doesn’t go for what she thinks she deserve. I thought you were persistent.

He regretted those words as soon as they came out, he wanted to say something else, but it was too late.

- Do not get me wrong, I part because I want to; I got a job somewhere else. You’re just collateral damage.

- Then why come tell me all this? – He demanded an answer as if her presence had no reason of being.

- Have you ever noticed how I’m a human being? Same as you. With two eyes, two ears, two hands, one mouth, and one heart. And just as you I get hurt, only you probably fail to remember that today as you did that other night when you broke it off before it even started. You hurt me and I wanted to let you know that. I did everything by the book, and I trusted you and you hurt me. I have every right to come tell you this, because I tried with everything I had. Can you say the same thing? – She said in a challenging manner, as he became quiet once more.

She took a deep breath before her next words. – Look, you don’t need to understand this. Matters of the heart never had much room for logic. I just came to tell you that I’m letting you go, at least in my mind; the heart will get there eventually.

She knew she should have left at that very moment, unfortunately her heart was committed to one last mistake, and unfortunately her mouth was quicker than her mind. In a second, she pressed her lips against his and gave him a kiss as if demanded by the stars, a kiss so deep, that she was sure it would never leave his spirit.

And that’s how they ended their last dispute, with a kiss. Whatever was left of their love started to fade away without any notice although he still felt he wasn’t ready to let her go. They looked at each other, trying to find the right time to breath. She expected an answer, but the empty air ruled his voice… he didn’t say a word.

-Goodbye! – She lastly said.

Sometimes “goodbye” implies a response, sometimes goodbye means: “this is your last chance to stop me”, but he decided not to listen to old sayings. Instead, he just stood at his front door, watching her as she walked away under a blanket of rain; taking his words, his heart, and his soul with her. He just stared, eager that she would at least glance back and say goodbye again, once last chance; then, perhaps then, he would swallow his pride and finally ask her to stay.
